Extracurricular activities
At SPK, we dedicate at least 2 hours per week in our schedule for extracurricular activities including Physical Education (PE), Music and Movement (M&M), Storytelling (ST), Gardening (GD), project-based activities (PB) to support our UK EYFS framework curriculum which is structured very differently to the national curriculum as it is organized across seven areas of learning rather than subject areas.
Extracurricular activities are essential not just to develop a child’s skills in various areas. They help kids build self-esteem and confidence and improve social skills. Through playful activities in small groups, children challenge themselves to try new things, learn how to be a part of a team and explore more about their talents. When children are confident, they take pride in their achievements and make huge strides – physically, emotionally, and intellectually.
Physical Education
We provide PE activities both inside and outside the classroom. This gives them the knowledge and capability to be active, and the desire to stay active for life. Our classes give children the chance to learn skills such as coordination, balance, confidence, respect, teamwork, leadership, memory, and creativity. Our sports program changes every term alternating Multisport (ball games like soccer, Yoga, and group exercise…).
Storytelling
At SPK, we strive to provide a holistic environment for learning and development for your child. This is why we incorporate storytelling into your child’s daily routines. We understand that learning and development can come from every part of a child’s life—storytelling is just one fun and enjoyable way. For storytelling, reading books is not the only form. Here are a few other forms of storytelling that we incorporate at our schools:
Nursery rhymes, Songs, Picture books, Cultural stories, Storytelling with puppets or other characters,
Personal (or a child’s) experiences etc.
Gardening
Kids love gardening, as it opens up plenty of opportunities to explore by doing. Children enjoy digging and playing in the dirt. There is no other better way to help children learn about the world of plants and animals as well as the environment as such than by providing them with their own garden space. Kids experience satisfaction and sustain interest, as they watch seeds they have planted sprout – and at the same time learn about the great cycle of life. Through gardening, they also learn to be respectful for the environment and take care of all living things in nature.
Music and Movement
At SPK, 2 to 6 years old experience music sessions. Many studies have proven the power of music to enhance memory, improve confidence, strengthen learning capabilities and develop motor skills. During our music sessions, children sing songs and participate in rhythm games. The main goal is to raise children’s interest in music through playful, entertaining musical activities, which will lay the foundation for music enjoyment in everyday life. Highly developed musical pitch and rhythmic ability go hand in hand with language acquisition: they both need to take place in the same biological timeframe, between birth and the age of 6. Much like sport, dance is great for developing motor skills and learning patience and discipline. Dance is also physically demanding and promotes a healthy and active lifestyle.
